Daily Record rebrands as the Daily Onion

By Sark Chasm, Our Alternative Comedy Correspondent

the onionFew of our readers will have come across a publication called "The Onion". It is a strange American idea, in which fun is poked at politicians "by simply drawing attention to the inherent absurdity in some people taking themselves seriously".

This channel is no great fan of these foreign ideas of "comedy". Re-runs of sitcoms, set in nice, safe, English suburbia like "Terry and June" are much more our cup of tea.

However, this new style of humour has come to Scotlandshire. A declining tabloid has decided to rebrand itself in this new style, and we review it here.

The practice of giving people silly names that can be read to mean something different in the local patois is common in such publications, but "Kenyon Wright" doesn't really work. No one would have such a silly name to begin with and it's obvious translation as "Ken yon ***? Right!" makes little sense.

Making fun of the Deity, Lady Thatcher, is in extremely poor taste, and the spoof advert at the foot of the page is an obvious reference to "Thatcher, Thatcher. Milk Snatcher", recalling the time when the Godess sensibly addressed the obesity problem among poor children.

The main feature, however, works well. Good satire relies on producing something ridiculous that politicians MIGHT say which, on reflection, is just silly.

The idea that our two most senior and serious politicians would associate themselves with a third-rate proven oath-breaker like Clegg in a joint pledge on an important topic is too silly for words. Some may recall how Clegg was ridiculed for his attempted apology, which can be viewed HERE.

Followers of politics in the House of Lords will appreciate the ridiculous idea that any Westminster leaders would "make a promise that we weren't absolutely sure they could deliver".

A good first try, DAILY ONION!
